Task 1
preparation for a live production.
Jamie New
Jamie is a high school student in year 11, which would make him between the ages of 15/16. He is at the stage in his life where he is beginning to discover things about himself such as sexuality, interests, depth of personality and his his painful past. Jamie is an only child who lives with his mother as he has an absent father, this is very hurtful to him but he doesn’t let it get in the way of who he is. Jamie is discovering that he is interested in makeup and drag, however is completely new to all of this so is only a beginner.
for jamies makeup i have decided to keep it fairly simple and plain as he is a school student and cant wear a heavy glam look. As jamie would be a beginner with makeup I have given him un-even filled in eyebrows as in my opinion eyebrows are the most difficult to get even. I would do this by using a dark brow pomade and an angled eyebrow brush, I would begin by following his natural eyebrow shape and filling it in to give it a blocked look. As it will look messy and thick I would then take a skin toned concealer and contour around the eyebrow to you desired shape then blend the concealer into the skin. Using that same concealer I would then use it underneath the eyes to get rid of any dark circles and to highlight the face, if the actor has any blemishes you should conceal over that too. I would blend this out with a fluffy brush to give it more of a smooth finish. As concealers tend to be more dewy you will want to use a translucent powder on top of this and over the face using a powder brush or a powder sponge as the actor will be under a stage light and will look overly shiny and seem sweaty. To continue with the natural look I would then use either a clear or low pigmented black mascara, this is so his eyelashes are accentuated without looking thick and clumpy with mascara. For the lips i would give him a clear gloss or lip balm so it’s effective without being over the top. To complete the look i would use a matted sett spray so the face will stay in place through out the performance without get shiny.
Mimi me
Mimi Me is Jamie news’ Drag persona. mimi me is very different from jamie, she is almost like his alter ego As mimi is very confident, outgoing and outshines everybody.
For Mimi Me’s look I decided that i would go with a slightly darker and warmer base tone as she is a performer and will be under a brighter stage light so this will avoid any flash back or pale look under this light. I would apply this using a foundation brush to cover all of the areas necessary then would buff it out using a flat brush to give it a flawless bass. As drag queens makeup is very heavy i would use a foundation as the base and build on this. I would then start on the eyebrows which are very bold and dramatic, I would again use a dark brow pomade and apply it with an angled eyebrow brush, i would start from the front of the brow and drag it alot further up than the natural brow then fill it in to make it dramatic then do the same on the other side. To conceal the brow i would use a very light almost white cream concealer to really define the brows. For the eyes I would apply an eyeshadow primer to make sure that they shadow will be as pigmented as possible and apply the brown shadow in an eyeliner shape, and pat it onto the eye to make sure the colour is packed in rather than dragged otherwise it will loose its boldness. I would then use a powder brush and sweep underneath the eyes to get rid of any fall out from the shadow. using the same cream concealer i would place it underneath the eyes, on the bone of the nose and underneath the cheekbones to highlight the face and make it seem slimmer and blend it out with a fluffy flat brush. I would go in with some heavy bronzing on the cheekbones and forehead using a cream contour and an angled fluffy flat brush, i would pat it into the skin rather than dragging it to ensure that the foundation doesn’t move, i would do this in an upward motion to give the illusion that the skin has been uplifted. i would then bake the face with a translucent powder to ensure the makeup stays in place and isn’t shiny. To come the look you will again need to set the face with a matted setting spray to keep the makeup from moving on the face.
Hugo Battersby
Hugo Battersby is a retired drag queen who now owns a store where he sells drag wear. When he comes across Jamie and sees how lost he is he decides to become his mentor so he can help him transform him into his desired drag persona. He is very wise and has alot of knowledge to share as his drag era was during major movements with the LGBT and drag community that had a huge impact on current periods, however this was also unfortunately around the same time as AIDS was having large outbreak.
For Hugo battersby‘s look it will be a very simple stage makeup as hugo is not yet in his drag persona. hugo is an aged male age in his 50s so i had deci to give him some wrinkles around the eyes for the “smile lines” and some underneath the eyes to show the bags that come with aging. In a typical theatrical play an older gentleman will play the part so there is no need to do any aging makeup on a younger person. I had decided to give the charcter some thick bushy brows as gentlemen of that age seem to have thick coarse hair, to do this I would use some got2beglued stong hold spray or some wax and throughly brush it through the brows and then brush them in an upward motion to get them to look as puffy/long as possible, i would also use a thin angles brush and some brow pomade to add extra hairs to get the right shape for the brow and add some brow powder into the brows using a fluffy brush to give them a thicker look. As they are already going to be using an older gentleman i would take advantage of the ageing features he already has and just slightly exaggerate them for example any wrinkles i w use some contour to make them seem deeper and add slight red/purple colouring under the eyes to make the baggs deeper. For the hair I would give him a comb over using a rounded brush and a hairdryer and use a side parting, and spray a fair amount of hair spray in the hair to keep it in place.
Loco Chanelle
Loco chanelle was a “famous” drag queen in the 80‘s around the big movements for LGBTQ + community So its likely that this charecter has faced alot of challenges throughout their career as a drag performer as it was not widely accepted.
Loco channels is a drag queen from an older generation so over the years the makeup would change with time. As drag wasnt as complex then as it is now I decided to give loco a bold drag glam look. I would start the look on the eyes, I would begin by apply a white base on the eyes with flat pack brush and tap it into the lids, once this has set i will pack in a dark brown shadow into the outer corner of the lids in a circular shape, i would begin to blend this out with a nude shadow using a fluffy brush. I would use some makeup remover to cut the crease in the inner corner of the eye then go over this with a light cream concealer and pat this into the eye once this had dried I would use a very light nude/white powder into the crease. For the liner I would do a big dramatic liner which covers half of the lid. I would do this using a liquid liner then going over it packing in some black shadow using a flat brush to make sure it does not smudge. For the base I would apply a warm tone full coverage liquid foundation using a foundation brush patting it into the skin to avoid streak marks. I would then use a dark cream conto stick on the higher cheekbones and forehead and blend this out with an angled contour brush patting it un an upward motion torwards the hair line to give the illusion of a ”face lift” . To contour the nose I would use a dark bronzer and put it on the sides of the nose up to the bridge and slightly blend this out, I would then apply highlights in the middle of the nose to give it a slimmer look. I would then also apply the highlights underneath the eyes and directly underneath the ”contour” under the cheekbones to make it sharper. Once this has been sitting for a while i would apply a loose translucent powder ok the whole face using a powder brush. I would then apply some blush above the cheek contour and add some 25mm lashes on the top lid ans some 10mm lashes on the bottom lid. With the hair I would style the wig with a combover, I would do this by backcombing the top half of the hair leaving a tiny section of the top layer and slicking this over the back combed hair making it look big and bold, for the bottom half of the hair would use some straighteners on them and flick them in an upward motion to create the flicks.
Pritti Pasha
pritti plays the roll of jamie news‘ best friend in school, she is a bubbly character who is also very supportive of Jamie and all of the things that he does. Pritti is a very smart student, she takes her education seriously as she is studying to become a doctor.
Priti is a muslim girl with very strict parents and a tom boy persona so she doesn’t wear any makeup. so for her look it would be some stage makeup for the person playing her character. Stage makeup is just slight makeup that will get rid of any flaws such as acne scaring or bags under the eyes. Priti is a young school student so she needs a fresh glowing look. So some stage makeup under the eyes by using a light weight liquid concealer under the eyes blended with a sponge. Then any acne covered with the same product, this would then need to be powdered so it is not shiny under stage lighting.
Miss Hedge
miss Hedge is one of Jamie's teachers who is there to help guid them about what happens after they graduate from school. she is very big on realism and doesn’t think Jamie is thinking realistically when he says that he wants to be a star. She seems to have very old fashion morals as she doesn’t seem to like it when she sees jamie in makeup.
Ms Haylock
Ms Haylock is jamies art teacher who he imagines in drag. It seems that they inspire jamie, but only have a small roll in the production.
