Unit 33 - working in the performing arts industry

• 5 year plan

For my short term plan it is to go to Northampton uni from my level 5 and then continue with my level 6 and graduate

They garunte work after you graduate so im hoping to be working in any makeup area.

Im hoping in couple of years from now i have done enough test shoots to fill up my portfolio so that i no longer need to do unpaid jobs and i can finally make some money from doing makeup jobs.

Long term Im hoping to make alot more contacts in the photography and fashion industry that i will be lucky enough to do makeup for runways and fashion shows and maybe even have makeup that makes it onto the front cover of vouge.

• Skills audit

• CPD and PDP (continuing personal development and personal development plan)

My plan is to continue doing loads of test shoots as offten as possible to both fill out my portfolio and help with my skills and confidence.

Im trying to put myself out there for all different kinds of makeup jobs so that i can work on my skill set in many different areas weather that be "makeup no makeup" which comes up most often, or editorial full face looks.

In my spare time im going to make more time for makeup so i can try out more creative looks that i may not have the opertunity to do so on shoots so im also able to add these into my portfolio to show a range or diverse skill.

• SWOT

Strengths;

• I'm outgoing so i do put myself out there for as many opportunities in the industry as physically possible for myself.

• versatile range of skills so i am able to do different types of jobs, for example I could be hired for a gory sfx short film shoot and I could also confidently do a fashion makeup shoot.

• good time management meaning im never late for clients making a good impression

• willing to take jobs unpaid to get more experience and build up my portfolio

• i always make sure that my service is in the best interests of my clients

• good communication skills so clients are able to get the results they want to the best of my ability, i will also speak them through my process whilst i am working so they are comfortable and prepared for what i am doing

• good level of patience so if i was to be working with a person who were rude or “difficult to work with” i am able to continue my work and rising above it

Weaknesses;

not 100% confident in my work

• my job gets in the way of me doing any makeup jobs over a longer period of time

• my lack of confidence sometimes stops me from trying things out of my comfort zone causing missed opportunities.

• i sometimes overthink what i am doing rather than be free and flowing with creative work

• i get very overwhelmed and upset if i feel i have not done a makeup look to the best of my ability

• I struggle with time management when i am doing makeup looks

• being persistent with my makeup work from home to keep building my portfolio

Opportunities;

every year i am hired by UK Shooters to do Halloween makeup for their big photoshoots

• I do a makeup work for a photographer called phillip for collaboration work. He now uses me for most of his shoots so we both get great pictures for our porfolios, we have now worked together on 5 shoots.

• I use various websites and apps such as;

TheFreelancerClub, BackStage, StarNow etc to publish my portfolio work in hopes that photographers, videographers and models may be interested in using my services.

• i use multiple social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok to post my portfolio work due to a fair amount of my jobs have been booked this way as social media is on the up rise in the industry

Threats;

Covid-19 can put the industry on pause as when this is on the uprising you aren’t allowed to mix with other people and when you are, you have to socially distance. This stops MUA’s from continuing their work as our job requires us to be working on clients face to face.

• Increasing competition in the industry. there are more and more artists who are working in the industry so you need something that makes you stand out from what everyone else is doing to make sure that you are selected for the job.

• Other MUA’s being trained by “well known” brands. i am aiming to be qualified up to a level 6 by the end of my course however i feel as though people who are trained by companies such as the “BrushStrokeAcademy” or “Plouise” who only get a level 3 qualification by the end of their course are still more likely to be booked for the job as they are trained by a well known .

analyse the importance of health, safety and wellbeing within the workplace and own career development including:

• Who is responsible and what for

As an mua it is your responsibility to make sure your keeping your kit clean and sanitised before and inbetween jobs.

Your responsible for having an in depth consultation before your jobs so you are as prepared as possible and have the correct kit on hand.

• Fire safety/risk assessment

Fire precautions act: is the act to prevent and take further provision for the protection of people from fire. This act made sure that buildings and workplaces were suitable for employees and clients if there was a fire to break out. Buildings had to meet regulations and certain requirements to pass, and without a certificate these buildings would not be suitable at all. It also mentions that if there was a risk of fire - I.e by hot lamps for the right lighting or equipment that could catch fire, that there would need to be assessments of how likely a fire is to occur through Health and Safety Risk assessments. Making sure there is clear pathways to exits and adequate counter measures such as fire extinguishers and other anti fire equipment. Theres different fire alarms that can be used in every area if the work place, there is your standard smoke alarm which detects smoke of any kind. There is a heat alarm, which detects a concentration of heat that could be a burning fire in the work place.  There is a carbon monoxide alarm, from which it could detect the presence of a fire, or other gas leaks such can cause serious or fatal harm to employees and clients.

• Risk Assessments including COSHH

• Health and safety for MUAs and Hairstylists

For safety a makeup artist will make employees aware of what could go wrong if the equipment is not set out properly and the potential harm it could cause to themselves or others. A risk assessment would have to be filled out by a store manager or the lead makeup artist before any treatment is carried out. If there were any infections conditions from a client it should be made aware to the artist so that they could carry out a contraindications form before carrying out a treatment.

For hygiene purposes it is essential to prevent any cross contamination by Washing your hands before you begin and have a disinfectant with you so that you can sterilise any of the equipment or brushes you will be using and should not be shared. To ensure this, all makeup brushes and tools should be cleaned and sterilized between each client.

Within working in hairdressing there are many different types of hazards. Such as substance abuse which is more comman than you may think. This could happen due to things such as aerosols being overly used then breathed in by you or your client, you could receive asthma from exposure from dusts or vapours. Another thing that should be done however not many hairdressers do is wear gloves, the reason being if you wash alot of hair very regularly, it is likely that you may receive demitis from being in contact with too much water, so the gloves will prevent this infection from occurring. When using electrical appliances it is essential to make sure that all liquids are kept away and that there is only one appliance plugged into a socket at a time to prevent fires from occurring. When working with multiple appliances make sure that the wires are neatly tucked away from the path to stop slipping of falling injuries.

• PPE (Covid)

Your ppe as a makeup artist should include a face mask that covers your nose and mouth and also a face viser that covers over the rest of your face.

Providing Personal Protective Equipment is of paramount importance to employers and employees and is required by law if necessary. Employees need to take reasonable care of PPE, and make sure it is reported if a piece is not up to safety standards. Records and maintenance of PPE is needed and now during the way out a pandemic, most likely the most important piece of equipment in a place of work in the field of makeup. Such as a face visor, mask and gloves for the employee - where fit and acceptable for the employee, as well as if needed a mask, gloves or visor for the client

Outline of the employers responsibilities for PPE

Every employer shall ensure that there is suitable Personal Protective Equipment provided to their employees who may be subject to high risk of their health and safety unless the risk is suitably controlled. An example of this is when everyone is vaccinated or a client could provide a clear test/proof of 2 weeks quarantined to be able to partake in being a client for makeup services.

The 3 responsibilities you have as an employer are: 1. performing a hazard assessment to identify any worrying areas of the workplace 2. identifying and providing appropriate PPE to employees 3. Maintaining and replacing damaged or unsuitable equipment
