Task 1 ~ Research
When it comes to special effects, it isn't just the makeup that we need to keep in mind. This is portrayed in many different ways in movies and in real life shows. Here are some examples of thess effects and how they work;
Visual effects:
VFX are any special effects added to a film using a computer. VFX typically combines live-action footage and manipulated or enhanced imagery to create realistic environments and characters. The main goal of VFX is to take something fake and make it look real, or at least believable. Visual effects can be practical as well. Such as explosions captured on-set during a car chase. VFX is used to create environments or characters that do not exist on set or to create scenes that are too dangerous to shoot with real people. Film directors and cinematographers work with VFX directors to decide which scenes require visual effects.
Computer animation/ CGI:
computer animations essentially bring to life static images or objects by digitally introducing movement to them. Animators use software to draw, model and move them in their desired way. The static image displays on a computer and constantly replaces it with an almost identical one to create the movement and similarly to this Computer-generated imagery is a term that describes digitally-created images in film and television. CGI is a subcategory of visual effects imagery filmmakers create or manipulate that does not exist in the physical environment being captured on film or video. CGI is instrumental in the making of movies and television shows and serves as the primary method for creating 3D-computer graphics for video games.
Stop motion:
Stop motion is an animation technique that involves playing many still images in a row, giving the still photos on the screen the illusion of movement. In movies, stop motion used to involve someone moving a clay figure or puppet between frames to achieve this illusion.
Chroma key:
A blue screen or a green screen (or any color) may be used to create the chroma key effect. A photograph or video is taken against the uniform background. A computer "subtracts" that color so the background vanishes. Overlaying this image over another will allow the action to be placed in any setting.
Digital composting:
Digital compositing involves using video effects software to assemble multiple images to make a final image. Both print media and movies use digital compositing. “Independence Day” used digital compositing to brilliant effect, making viewers feel like they were truly seeing an alien invasion in action. The digital compositing in “Independence Day” seamlessly combined digital movie effects with miniatures and real actors.
Animatronics:
Animatronics is a type of special effects which involves building mechanized creatures like dinosaurs, imaginary animals, and others. The name “animatronics” is used to refer to generic animatronic creations made by other film studios, while Disney has copyrighted “audio-animatronics” to refer to their creature creations. In combination with other special effects, animatronics can lend a level of reality and texture to a film that computer animation does not provide.
Prosthetics:
Prosthetics is the process of lifecasting, sculpting and moulding to create a makeup look that transforms a person . A huge part of prosthetic makeup is creating the actual prosthetic pieces to use in the look. These are usually made from foam latex, gelatine, or most commonly, silicone. Prosthetics artists work with these these materials to make the prosthetic pieces. The reason for using prosthetic makeup is because it can completely change the appearance of the person wearing it, it can age them, can give them the illusion of wounds and even transform them into creatures.
Health and safety
In the performing arts industry health and safety is absolutely crucial. This is in all areas such as, makeup artist, hairdresser, lighting designer, set builder etc.. Within the performance arts industry there are a lot of things that can be dangerous, for example a makeup artist can work with very strong and hazardous substances and the light crew are working with electrical devices so this is why health and safety regulations are put in place.
In any industry you go into, risk assessments will be put into place to ensure that you have a safe environment to work in. Risk assessments are used to ensure safety in any jobs you take on to keep employers from harm, especially those who are more vulnerable such as pregnant women, children and people with disabilities and special needs. This is something that needs to be reinstated every time you have new employers and when you have new equipment in the workplace. For health and safety there are many regulations that all companies have to abide by such as the workplace (health, safety and welfare) regulations which is to do with the requirements of how a workplace should be, be it temperature, ventilation and working in hot/cold areas for the clients and employees health. As well as cleanliness, lighting and room that would be acceptable for an employee to carry out their job. From a makeup perspective it would require my own space to be comfortable and do my job well with the client, as well as adequate lighting to find the right shades and contrasts that would create the look I require. Also the same instance would be made for myself and my client to be comfortable and for it to be the right temperatures in the heat or cold. The workplace regulations cover all bases to make sure that every client and employee is safe and can work to the best of their ability by covering and regulating requirements of a workplace.
Health and safety act:
Take breaks between your work if the client/ model has to stand to prevent them from passing out. Also make sure your model has clothes that cover them to keep their modesty, also they will need enough clothing to keep them warm during the sesion.
The provision and use of work equipment regulations:
P.U.W.E.R - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1889, is the regulation that requires equipment at work to be suitable for its intended and safe use. It also makes sure the equipment is maintained and inspected to keep it in a safe and useable condition as well as constantly safely installed and does not deteriate. It also puts the employers and businesses responsible for employees who use equipment, whether owned by them or not.
Meaning any equipment I use on clients will be responsibly looked after and maintained by myself or by my employers. It is also intended that myself and my employers make sure the equipment is safe and could not cause harm in any way.

The manual handling operations regulations:
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992
"Any transporting or supporting of a load (including lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or bodily force"
This is the regulations protecting employees from injuries due to heavy objects and the action of moving them. It allows for the training and informing of employees how to deal with heavy objects and how to move them. This can be seen in a variety of ways as an employee as I could be moving a heavy case of makeup or equipment for a clients use and be injuring myself through the movement of it. This regulation allows for myself to he trained or informed on how and if I should move it safely and without injury and within practicality.
The fire precautions act :
( research different fire alams)
Fire precautions act: is the act to prevent and take further provision for the protection of people from fire. This act made sure that buildings and workplaces were suitable for employees and clients if there was a fire to break out. Buildings had to meet regulations and certain requirements to pass, and without a certificate these buildings would not be suitable at all. It also mentions that if there was a risk of fire - I.e by hot lamps for the right lighting or equipment that could catch fire, that there would need to be assessments of how likely a fire is to occur through Health and Safety Risk assessments. Making sure there is clear pathways to exits and adequate counter measures such as fire extinguishers and other anti fire equipment. Theres different fire alarms that can be used in every area if the work place, there is your standard smoke alarm which detects smoke of any kind. There is a heat alarm, which detects a concentration of heat that could be a burning fire in the work place. There is a carbon monoxide alarm, from which it could detect the presence of a fire, or other gas leaks such can cause serious or fatal harm to employees and clients.
personal protection equipment at work:
Providing Personal Protective Equipment is of paramount importance to employers and employees and is required by law if necessary. Employees need to take reasonable care of PPE, and make sure it is reported if a piece is not up to safety standards. Records and maintenance of PPE is needed and now during the way out a pandemic, most likely the most important piece of equipment in a place of work in the field of makeup. Such as a face visor, mask and gloves for the employee - where fit and acceptable for the employee, as well as if needed a mask, gloves or visor for the client.
Outline of the employers responsibilities for PPE ;
Every employer shall ensure that there is suitable Personal Protective Equipment provided to their employees who may be subject to high risk of their health and safety unless the risk is suitably controlled. An example of this is when everyone is vaccinated or a client could provide a clear test/proof of 2 weeks quarantined to be able to partake in being a client for makeup services.
The 3 responsibilities you have as an employer are: 1. performing a hazard assessment to identify any worrying areas of the workplace 2. identifying and providing appropriate PPE to employees 3. Maintaining and replacing damaged or unsuitable equipment

The electricity at work regulations
(patt tested )
The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989) is for employers and employees to require action and plans to limit the possibility and risk of someone being injured or being killed by electricity in the workplace. Within the makeup workplace there are many light fittings, small electrical machinery and plug sockets that could put people in danger, therefore making it very important for the employers to take out a full plan on how to limit the risk and probability of someone being electrocuted and seriously harmed by these factors. The main ways employers could do this is: making sure all electrical appliances and spots are constructed to avoid danger, maintenance on these electrical appliances regularly and finally carry out work using electrical appliances in a way that prevents any danger.
