Unit 2

professional development

My chosen specialism in the performing arts industry is creative makeup and special effects makeup for TV and film. The skills needed are a diverse range of skill set so that what ever job gets given to you, it will be completed to the standard, for example weather you get given a half body special effects piece or a 1920s era makeup look you should be able to perform well in either or. Other skills that you will need is to be able to work in this industry is to be able to work as a team with good communication skills, this is a big factor in this area as you will be working with other departments such as hair, costume, lighting designers and choreographers. If these departments do not communicate with each other the look as a whole will not harmonise with each other and won’t make any sense. This look also needs to look good under stage lighting and/or set lights so depending on the lighting used depends on the shades of makeup to use. SWOT

Strengths;

• I'm outgoing so i will put myself out there for opportunities in the industry. • versatile range of skills so i am able to do different types of jobs, for example I could be hired for a gory sfx short film shoot and I could also confidently do a fashion makeup shoot.

• good time management meaning im never late for clients making a good impression

• willing to take jobs unpaid to get more experience and build up my portfolio

• i always make sure that my service is in the best interests of my clients

• good communication skills so clients are able to get the results they want to the best of my ability, i will also speak them through my process whilst i am working so they are comfortable and prepared for what i am doing

• good level of patience so if i was to be working with a person who were rude or “difficult to work with” i am able to continue my work and rising above it

Weaknesses;

not 100% confident in my work

• my job gets in the way of me doing any makeup jobs over a longer period of time

• my lack of confidence sometimes stops me from trying things out of my comfort zone causing missed opportunities.

• i tend to overthink what i am doing rather than be free and flowing with creative work

• I struggle to come out with ideas on the top of my head and would rather have something in front of me as inspiration

• i get very overwhelmed and upset if i feel i have not done a makeup look to the best of my ability

• I struggle with time management when i am doing makeup looks

• being persistent with my makeup work from home to keep building my portfolio

Opportunities;

every year i am hired by UK Shooters to do Halloween makeup for their big photoshoots

• I did a makeup job for ShortCutsHair as an MUA for their shoot and was offered more work with them, however due to their shoots being weekend based and I am employed I was unable to do so.

• I use various websites and apps such as;

TheFreelancerClub, BackStage, StarNow etc to publish my portfolio work in hopes that photographers, videographers and models may be interested in using my services.

• i use multiple social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok to post my portfolio work due to a fair amount of my jobs have been booked this way as social media is on the up rise in the industry

Threats;

Covid-19 can put the industry on pause as when this is on the uprising you aren’t allowed to mix with other people and when you are, you have to socially distance. This stops MUA’s from continuing their work as our job requires us to be working on clients face to face.

• Increasing competition in the industry. there are more and more artists who are working in the industry so you need something that makes you stand out from what everyone else is doing to make sure that you are selected for the job.

• Other MUA’s being trained by “well known” brands. i am aiming to be qualified up to a level 6 by the end of my course however i feel as though people who are trained by companies such as the “BrushStrokeAcademy” or “Plouise” who only get a level 3 qualification by the end of their course are still more likely to be booked for the job as they are trained by a well known company.

Progression routes to becoming creative makeup and special effects makeup for TV and film.

When it comes to the makeup industry there are many different routes you can take that can possibly lead to you getting a job in TV and film. This is normally a longer process that can come by taking up a course and getting your degree and becoming a freelancer and booking jobs privately, some of the other routes include doing work experience on sets and work your way up to bigger job opportunities or doing this same process working in a makeup company for example, MAC, Kiko milano or Sephora etc. I am choosing to do a mixture of all three routes by continuing my makeup course and hopefully getting my degree in the end and in the mean time trying to privately book jobs and apply to work in a cosmetic company. This will help me become highly qualified with my degree and gain alot of experience in many departments doing free lancing and working for a company will also help me build up more clientele and hopefully consistent work. due to more experience and my qualification i will be more likely to be hired onto bigger jobs that will help me build up my brand to hopefully become a well known artist which will get me to where i want to be in my career.

The extent of development of your skills in identified target areas.

I have developed skills in my target areas such as prosthetic works, in my level 3 we were making prosthetics by latex’ing our sculpted pieces which made them very thick and hard to blend leaving un- realistic result, however on our current level 4 we have made progress by learning how to make applicable prosthetic pieces which leave a much improved end result, for further improvements in this i eed to leave less space between my piece and the wall so there is less room to blend out my pieces leaving a smoother edge. This is important in the industry i am going into as most clips are shot under high definition cameras with bright lighting.

How your professional aspirations align with wider industry trends and business developments?

my professional aspirations align with the industry as it is a career that is always going to be needed and will consistently be moving with the times as there’s always new trends and techniques that are being put out into the industry. This means that i will be able to have consistent work within the industry on many different platforms weather that be a special effects prosthetics piece for a movie or creative makeup for a television show. Its always to keep up with all trends so when there are developments within your own Business you can adjust with them.

reflect and analyse future opportunities/work experience/training – provide self-criticism on what you could do better and why When i take on any work experience i do tend to get nervous and overwhelmed when i am working on clients which can sometimes throw me off of the work that i do. I need to be more confident in myself when im working so i can produce work to the best of my ability. i also need to keep up with practicing my skills in my spare time so i am constantly improving and can work my way up to more complex work without stressing over smaller jobs. I also need to put myself out there and apply for more jobs even if i think it may be slightly out there for me, just to get more experience in different jobs to see which suits me best in my career path.

Your 5 year plan Short, medium and long term.

in 5 years i would like to be working on smaller movie sets as i feel that is more of a realistic goal for myself.

to get myself to where i want to be i will be short term i will apply for as many small movie jobs that i can get, for example student films and short films

this will help me fill my portfolio with the type of content that other small directors could be looking for, which could potentially land me more jobs through my social media. my medium plan is to try and work for the same people consistently and create a clientele base so that i Am able to have consistent work. In this time im hoping to have finnished my course and be graduated with my degree so i am completely qualified for what i want to do in the future. my long term plan is to apply for brands and bigger jobs and hopefully be employed under a brand so i can get job booked through them and hopefully get some more training under the brand and make a name for myself as an artist.
